Indicated for the dietary management of individuals with:
- Cystic fibrosis
- Osteogenesis imperfecta
- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
- Nutritional rickets

For example, in cystic fibrosis, its ability to influence respiratory function, immunological processes and carbohydrate metabolism is important. In particular, a correlation has been observed between low vitamin D levels and respiratory disease; high vitamin D levels are in fact associated with better lung function and a lower incidence of infectious exacerbations.

Vitamin D also appears to be able to reduce inflammatory cytokines and inhibit oxidative stress. All these beneficial actions make it essential for individuals with CF to maintain adequate blood levels of vitamin D. However, a severe vitamin D deficiency has been observed precisely in individuals with cystic fibrosis, including those who regularly take multivitamins. A blood vitamin D concentration of 30 ng/ml is considered adequate, and this is the target that guidelines recommend achieving and maintaining through dietary supplementation. In many patients, weekly administration of very high doses of vitamin D has proved inadequate due to the severe intestinal malabsorption of this vitamin; administration of lower doses, but at shorter intervals, is therefore preferable.
