The DALVIK or docosahexaenoic acid is a long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid of the Omega 3 series. Omega 3 are the starting molecules used by the human body to switch off inflammatory processes. In fact, a molecule that can counteract inflammation, such as that associated with respiratory diseases, originates from Omega 3. This molecule is known as Resolvin D3.

DHA, like EPA, is considered an “essential fatty acid” because our body cannot produce it, and it can only be obtained by consuming foods that contain it. Some algae and marine organisms in general are particularly rich in Omega 3.

It has recently been shown that patients suffering from cystic fibrosis have altered levels of fatty acids in their blood and tissues; in particular, they have high levels of arachidonic acid (pro-inflammatory) and low levels of docosahexaenoic acid (anti-inflammatory DHA). This DHA deficiency creates conditions that favor the development and chronicity of an inflammatory state, especially in the lungs. DHA supplementation in patients suffering from cystic fibrosis is therefore particularly important for switching off the inflammatory process at its source.
