Ethicon Silk sutures, made of non-absorbable natural silk, are indicated for sutures and ligations of vessels and soft tissues, including use in cardiovascular, plastic and ophthalmic surgery.

Silk causes an acute inflammatory reaction in the tissue, followed by a gradual encapsulation of the suture by the connective tissue fibers. Although it is a non-absorbable suture, silk fibers are degraded in vivo with gradual loss of tensile strength over time.
Due to the gradual loss of tensile strength that can occur over long periods of time in vivo, silk should not be used where permanent tensile strength is required.

The sutures are subjected to the Perma Hand dewaxing process and colored black with a special wax mixture.
The exclusive Perma-Hand production process (dewaxing of the raw thread before braiding) makes the suture truly purified and allows for a uniform caliber to be obtained. The compactness of the weave gives the thread high resistance and excellent handling, superior to that of any other suture material.
