SELENIOMETHIONINE
Selenium is an essential trace element, constituting numerous selenoproteins (selenium-containing proteins) which have enzymatic, structural, transport and storage roles.
Selenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress: it is a fundamental constituent of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase used physiologically by our body to counteract the harmful action of free radicals. It also supports normal thyroid function, as some fundamental selenium-containing enzymes are implicated in the activation and regulation of thyroid enzymes.
Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal nails and hair, as well as the normal function of the immune system. In humans, selenium can provide support for normal spermatogenesis as it is part of the composition of the selenoproteins responsible for the integrity and motility of spermatozoa.
