Coenzyme Q10 is a substance present in human tissues and represents an important physiological element for the correct functioning of the mitochondrion, an intracellular organelle that acts as an "energy control unit". Mitochondria are present in all tissues and are found in greater numbers in tissues characterized by a particularly active oxidative metabolism such as the heart, skeletal muscle, brown adipose tissue, liver and brain.

Coenzyme Q10 plays a fundamental role in the transport of electrons across the membranes of the mitochondria and is involved in the processes that produce energy from foods. Aging, exercise and stress decrease the concentration of coenzyme Q10.
