Ethicon Prolene sutures are a type of non-absorbable, sterile, synthetic suture composed of propylene. The wire is colored blue to improve visibility.

Ethicon Prolene sutures are indicated for sutures and ligations of vessels and soft tissues, in cases where the use of sutures made of non-absorbable material is indicated. Prolene sutures are particularly indicated in cardiovascular, plastic and ophthalmic surgery.

Cardiovascular surgeons have relied on Prolene sutures for over 40 years. Controlled linear stretching process and high tensile strength are designed for each thread. The special extrusion process guarantees uniformity of caliber and smoothness

Ethicon Prolene sutures exhibit minimal tissue reaction, followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture into the connective tissue. They are not absorbed and are not subject to breakdown or weakening by tissue enzymes.

Prolene, being a monofilament suture, is not involved in infections and has been used successfully in contaminated or infected wounds to eliminate or minimize sinus formation and suture extrusion. Furthermore, the absence of adherence to the tissues allowed the use of Ethicon Prolene with a pull out technique for suture extraction.
